Based on the first Broadway musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, ‘En un barrio de Nueva York’ is a romantic and fiery film, exuberant and intoxicating, optimistic and full of life and, therefore, ideal to help us leave behind what suffered during the last 15 months.

It takes place in an idealized version of Washington Heights, a poor neighborhood inhabited by Latino immigrants that director Jon M. Chuit turns into an immense playground full of activity, and of sounds and colors that collide and mix; a place in constant change, whose residents are constantly renewed and in which, over a few days, the group of characters portrayed by the film face pressures such as the difficulty of integration, the increase in gentrification, diminishing opportunities and the pursuit of what they call the American dream.

As he contemplates them, ‘In a New York neighborhood’ does not stop moving. The action advances hand in hand with the songs composed by Miranda, an assortment that contains rap, salsa, merengue and soul and transmits a contagious energy, and by an ingenious catalog of choreographies in which homages to Jacques Demy, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse and Busby Berkeley .

The number of musical numbers and characters to follow is such that, despite the 143 minutes of footage, the plot lines are somewhat blurred, and the same can be said of allusions to racist discrimination that immigrants suffer. In fact, the film tries to celebrate the Latino community without delving into the bitterest aspects of the real world.

It is a fantasy full of essentially noble characters, melodies that waste sweetness, and arguments to convince us of the importance of solidarity and collaboration both in good times and in bad, and to encourage us to go out – as soon as we are all vaccinated, it is understood- to dance in the street. What has been said: the perfect movie for our time .
